DR. ABBOTT - HIP ARTHROSCOPY

Hip arthroscopy, or a “hip scope,” is a minimally-invasive procedure. The use of an arthroscope means that the procedure is done using 3-4 small incisions (approximately 1/4-1/2 inch long) rather than a more invasive “open” surgery that would require a much larger incision. These small incisions, or “portals", are used to insert the surgical instruments into the hip.  Arthroscopic hip surgery is usually performed in an outpatient surgery center, which means no overnight hospital stay is required.

The two most common current indications for hip arthroscopy include correction of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and an acetabular labral tear.  Other less frequent conditions treated through hip arthroscopy include tendon or ligament injuries, hip instability, and an inflamed or damaged synovium. Because all of these conditions may eventually lead to hip arthritis, treating them with arthroscopic procedures may be a beneficial option for patients.

Many people return to sports and other physical activities at the level they were at before their onset of hip pain and impingement.
